Occupational Therapy
What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession that addresses the habilitative and rehabilitative treatment of patients based on their occupations, or, the valuable ways in which they spend their time. The areas of occupation according to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework are Activities of Daily Living, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Sleep and Rest, Work, Education, Play, Leisure, and Social Participation.
The primary occupations of childhood are Activities of Daily Living (bathing, grooming, feeding, dressing, toileting), Play, Education, and Social Participation. We use fun and functional activities selected and designed specifically for your child to help them meet their goals.
Why Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapists approach treatment from a holistic view. We see the patient as a whole person with strengths and weaknesses which make them special! Using this lens, Occupational Therapists identify the barriers to a patient’s participation in meaningful occupations and use techniques of remediation, modification, or compensation to increase their independence in, and enjoyment of, those occupations.
Is OT Right for My Child?
Your child may benefit from Occupational Therapy if they struggle in any of the following areas:
- Meeting developmental milestones in motor skills
- Completing age-level self-care (bathing, grooming, feeding, dressing, toileting)
- Fine/Gross motor strength and coordination
- Visual Perception
- Visual Motor Integration
- Sensory Processing and Regulation (body awareness, balance, hyper- or hypo-sensitivities, disorganization, etc.)
- Executive Functioning (attention, organization, prioritization, memory, processing speed, etc.)
- Social Skills
